ASPARAGUS
Purple Sweet

Color as rich as its yields. More tender than green asparagus, with a sweet and nutty flavor in extra-large, deep burgundy spears. (Purple Sweet turns green when cooked.)

Source: From R.H. Shumway
Planting depth: 6"
Spacing (row/crown): 4'/12-16"

Suggestions: Create 7-inch-deep, V-shaped furrows. Spread a handful each of bonemeal and wood ashes, plus a 1-inch layer of compost of well-rotted manure in each furrow. Soak crowns (1-year-old roots) in compost tea for 10 minutes, then lay on top of organic matter. Lay them on their sides and cover with 2 inches of soil. As shoots emerge, gradually fill in the furrows until they are level with the soil surface. Keep plants weeded and mulch heavily after furrows have been filled in.
