| ASPARAGUS
Mary Washington
Tasty shoots are thick, straight, dark green and tinged purple at the tightly
folded tips. Highly resistant to asparagus rust. Uniform heavy yields.
Source: Vermont Bean Seed Co.
Planting depth: 6"
Spacing (row/crown): 4'/12-16"
Heirloom
Suggestions: Create 7-inch-deep, V-shaped furrows.
Spread a handful each of bonemeal and wood ashes, plus a 1-inch layer of compost
of well-rotted manure in each furrow. Soak crowns (1-year-old roots) in compost
tea for 10 minutes, then lay on top of organic matter. Lay them on their sides
and cover with 2 inches of soil. As shoots emerge, gradually fill in the furrows
until they are level with the soil surface. Keep plants weeded and mulch heavily
after furrows have been filled in.
