Yvette's Garden

--------------------------------------------

It's New Year's Eve! I'm finally getting a LOT of stuff done on the Web site. I just finished up the Marketplace section, so now the only thing I have to do is the Gardens (vegetable, herb, heirloom and flowers), which is the biggest part of the site. I may launch with a slightly small section and then expand it. I'd like to get everything else up and running, so I can register with search engines and get some other sites linking to me.

I am starting to get seed catalogs and I'm thinking about what I want to grow. Oh, I also did the thing today that I saw on Victory Garden (the tecnique I mentioned below about pruning the pepper plants and overwintering them indoors). I'm not sure if I did it right. They look pretty crappy right now! Another project on the horizon is something for my seedstarting. I think I outgrew my basement setup last year (I only have one 48-inch light fixture with 2 bulbs in it) and I'm considering setting something up in the Solarium this year. They sell these really cool shelves with adjustable lights, but they cost $300-$500, so I think I can build something cheaper. I'm going to go to Lowe's (or Home Depot) and look at some shelves and some shop light fixtures to see if I can build something attractive enough to be in the house. If not, it's back to the basement!!

Happy New Year!

--------------------------------------------

I've been so busy with work and Holiday stuff that I haven't posted at all. I'm already starting to think about what I want to grow next year. I'm starting to look at seed catalogs and take stock of what I already have. The one thing I am most concerned about is the tomatoes. This year, I lost almost all my tomatoes. It was horrible. So, that's where I'll be focused, but I've also got a couple of other things on my mind.

1. I've never had much luck with any root vegetables or any kinds of onions. Even radishes (which should be really easy) turn out crappy. I think the soil still is too clumpy and has too much clay in it. So, I'll be working to improve the soil overall, but I'm also thinking of building a double-high raised bed and dumping a bunch of good soil (that I'll buy) in it to grow carrots, onions, leeks, radishes, etc.

2. I saw this show today (I think it was Victory Garden) where this woman dug up a pepper plant toward the end of the season and then repotted it in a pot to bring inside. She staked it in the pot, then cut all the lower stems off (so it looked like a little tree) and then did some other trimming. She said in December, all the leaves will drop and it will look horrible and at that time, you're supposed to do a severe pruning (she said she calls it a deer antler). In the spring, it will get all the foliage back and then it will fruit again. I'm thinking of doing this to the 2 Thai Hot pepper plants that I grew on the porch in containers. Right now, they're in the solarium and they both still have tons of peppers on them. They were floweing as late as November! I will trim them, then grow them in the solarium until it's warm enough to put them back outside.

The only other news I have is that I really need to finish the Web site!!!
